IgE: The Fast, Allergic Reaction
IgE antibodies drive classic food allergies. Reactions are typically:
- Rapid — usually within minutes to two hours of eating
- Potentially severe — hives, swelling, breathing difficulty, and in extreme cases anaphylaxis
- Diagnosed and managed by an allergist, using tools such as skin-prick or IgE blood testing

IgG: The Slow, Delayed Response
IgG antibodies are associated with food sensitivities. These reactions are typically:
- Delayed — symptoms may appear hours or even days after eating
- Lower grade but persistent — bloating, headaches, fatigue, skin issues, and general discomfort are commonly reported
- Hard to identify by memory alone, because the trigger meal happened long before the symptom
Why the Difference Matters for Testing
Because the two mechanisms are different, the tests are different too:
- IgE testing (through an allergist) looks for true allergies — the fast, potentially dangerous reactions.
- IgG testing, like Pinnertest, measures IgG antibody levels to individual foods to highlight possible delayed sensitivities worth exploring with a structured elimination plan.
An IgG test does not detect allergies, and an IgE test does not reveal delayed sensitivities — they answer different questions.
Which One Do You Need?
As a general rule of thumb:
- Fast, acute reactions after eating → talk to an allergist about IgE testing.
- Ongoing, hard-to-pin-down symptoms such as bloating, fatigue, headaches, or skin flare-ups → IgG food sensitivity testing may help you and your provider identify foods worth eliminating and reintroducing methodically.
