Casein Intolerance & Dairy Sensitivity

Casein Intolerance: When Dairy Protein Triggers Bloating, Fatigue & Skin Issues

If milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream or whey-based shakes leave you bloated, tired, foggy or with skin flare-ups, you may be reacting to casein — the main protein in dairy. This is different from lactose intolerance, which is about digesting milk sugar. Casein intolerance is often a delayed IgG food sensitivity.

What Is Casein Intolerance?

Casein intolerance is a delayed immune reaction to proteins in cow’s milk and dairy products. It is not the same as lactose intolerance, which is caused by low lactase enzyme and difficulty digesting milk sugar. Lactose intolerance is usually diagnosed with other medical tests, not with IgG food sensitivity testing.

Pinnertest measures IgG reactions to dairy proteins and foods, not lactose digestion. If your symptoms are driven by immune reactions to dairy proteins like casein, these may appear in your Pinnertest results.

Casein intolerance often overlaps with other food sensitivities, including: dairy-related foods, egg sensitivity, wheat/grain reactions and yeast sensitivity. You can read more about delayed reactions in What Is Food Sensitivity?.

Common Symptoms of Casein Sensitivity

Many people who think they have “lactose intolerance” actually react more to dairy proteins. Lactose intolerance and casein sensitivity can also coexist, so it is important to discuss symptoms with your healthcare provider.

How Pinnertest Helps Identify Casein & Dairy Protein Triggers

The Pinnertest Food Sensitivity Test measures IgG reactions to over 200 foods, including several dairy-related items. It does not diagnose lactose intolerance, but it can highlight immune reactions to dairy proteins and other foods eaten alongside dairy.

What to Do if You Suspect Casein Intolerance

If you notice symptoms after dairy, you can start by journaling your intake and symptoms for 2–4 weeks. With your practitioner, you may try a period of reducing or removing dairy proteins while you review your test results and other evaluations.

Common casein-rich foods to discuss limiting:

  • Milk, cream, half & half
  • Cheese, yogurt, kefir, ice cream
  • Whey and casein-based protein shakes
  • Processed foods with “milk powder”, “milk protein” or “caseinates”

Potential alternatives (with professional guidance):

  • Casein-free plant milks (almond, coconut, oat, etc.)
  • Dairy-free yogurts or cheeses (if tolerated)
  • Recipes built around non-dairy whole foods

For ideas after removing trigger foods, see Best Foods to Eat After Removing Trigger Foods .

If you experience severe or acute reactions like breathing difficulty, throat swelling or chest pain after dairy, seek emergency care. Those can be signs of an immediate allergy, which is different from delayed IgG sensitivity and from lactose intolerance.

Casein Intolerance & Dairy Sensitivity – FAQ

Lactose intolerance is caused by difficulty digesting milk sugar (lactose) due to low lactase enzyme. Casein intolerance is an immune reaction to dairy proteins. Pinnertest does not test for lactose digestion or diagnose lactose intolerance; it measures IgG responses to foods, including dairy proteins. Learn more in What Is Food Sensitivity?.

Yes. Many people notice a link between dairy intake and skin flare-ups. Casein-related inflammation can contribute to acne or redness in some individuals. See Acne & Food Intolerance and Food Sensitivity Skin Issues.

Yes. Pinnertest includes dairy-related foods in its IgG panel and can highlight immune reactions to those foods. It does not diagnose lactose intolerance, but it can help you and your practitioner decide whether dairy proteins should be reduced or removed in an elimination plan.
